The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is taking a major leap toward modernizing Salt Lake City’s TRAX light rail system. In an announcement on October 23, 2024, the UTA Board of Trustees approved a contract with Stadler to supply up to 80 next-generation light rail vehicles. This partnership is a key part of the broader TRAX Modernization project aimed at boosting capacity, accessibility, and reliability across the transit network, which has seen a 17% surge in ridership this year alone.

Utah-Based Manufacturing: A Local Win

Stadler, an international leader in rail vehicle manufacturing, was chosen for its state-of-the-art Citylink light rail design and its Salt Lake City manufacturing headquarters. This local production setup allows UTA to work directly with the Stadler team, refining designs in real-time and adapting to any new requirements efficiently. Jay Fox, UTA’s Executive Director, highlighted that this localized approach will streamline the project timeline and offer Utah residents faster access to the new vehicles.

The partnership isn’t just about expanding rail capacity; it’s a chance for Utahns to contribute to their own transit system. “The opportunity to build trains for our community is a massive honor,” said Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US Inc. "Most of our workforce lives in and around Salt Lake City and will ride these new trains, so this partnership with UTA is deeply meaningful for us.”

The Citylink Advantage

The new Citylink vehicles stand out for their accessible, low-floor design, which provides better passenger flow and ease of access for everyone, from daily commuters to those with mobility needs. The first 20 vehicles will cost $129 million, partially funded by a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant, with the potential to order up to 60 more as additional funding becomes available. These vehicles meet Buy America requirements, ensuring that this project benefits not only UTA’s riders but also the local economy.

This is Stadler’s first U.S. contract for the Citylink model, which has been successful across Europe. With over 800 units operating internationally, the Citylink model is known for its smooth, low-vibration performance and reliability—a perfect fit for a rapidly growing transit network.

Part of a National Infrastructure Investment

UTA’s TRAX modernization project is part of a broader push by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to enhance infrastructure across the nation. In total, USDOT recently committed $4.2 billion to various infrastructure projects. This funding includes high-impact projects such as Boston’s North Station renovations and the California high-speed rail station in Madera. These investments, including UTA’s project, aim to modernize transportation systems to meet today’s demands for efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

The UTA-Stadler partnership highlights how strategic investments in public transit can deliver immediate improvements while positioning communities for long-term growth. By strengthening local manufacturing and enhancing transit options, Utah’s residents can look forward to a safer, more reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation system that’s built by and for their own community.

As the TRAX Modernization unfolds, Utahns are on the brink of experiencing a transformative shift in public transit, designed to keep pace with the state’s growing needs and deliver a world-class commuting experience.
